Focusing of surface-acoustic-wave fields on „100... GaAs surfaces

چکیده
Focused surface-acoustic waves ~SAWs! provide a way to reach intense acoustic fields for electroand optoacoustic applications on semiconductors. We have investigated the focusing of SAWs by interdigital transducers ~IDTs! deposited on ~100!-oriented GaAs substrates. The focusing IDTs have curved fingers designed to account for the acoustic anisotropy of the substrate. Different factors that affect focusing, such as the aperture angle and the configuration of the IDT fingers, were systematically addressed. We show that the focusing performance can be considerably improved by appropriate choice of the IDT metal pads, which, under appropriate conditions, create an acoustic waveguide within the IDT. We demonstrate the generation of narrow ~full width at half maximum of approx 15 mm!, high-frequency ~0.5 GHz!, continuous SAW beams with vertical displacement as high as 4 nm collimated over distances that exceed 100 mm. © 2003 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1625419#

Bragg diffraction of microcavity polaritons by a surface acoustic wave.
Bragg scattering of polaritons by a coherent acoustic wave is mediated and strongly enhanced by the exciton states resonant with the acoustic and optic fields in the intraband and interband transitions, respectively. In this case, in contrast with conventional acousto-optics, the resonantly enhanced Bragg spectra reveal the multiple orders of diffracted light. For polaritons in GaAs microcaviti...
متن کاملStudy of the Frictional Surface Damage Using Acoustic Emission Method
In this study, the change at rubbing surfaces has been investigated experimentally using an acoustic emission signal monitoring system. A steel ring is slipped on the surface of a metallic sheet to simulate frictional conditions. The mechanical disturbances caused by the movement of the ring produce stress waves propagating along the sheet surface. The out of plane displacement of the sheet su...
متن کاملSurface acoustic wave propagation and inhomogeneities in low-density two-dimensional electron systems near the metal–insulator transition
We have measured the surface acoustic wave velocity shift in a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure containing a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) in a low-density regime (!10 cm) at zero magnetic field. The interaction of the surface acoustic wave with the 2DES is not well described by a simple model using low-frequency conductivity measurements. We speculate that this conflict is a result of inho...
متن کاملThe Deterministic Generation of Extreme Surface Water Waves Based on Soliton on Finite Background in Laboratory
This paper aims to describe a deterministic generation of extreme waves in a typical towing tank. Such a generation involves an input signal to be provided at the wave maker in such a way that at a certain position in the wave tank, say at a position of a tested object, a large amplitude wave emerges. For the purpose, we consider a model called a spatial-NLS describing the spatial propagation o...
متن کاملSurface acoustic-wave attenuation by a two-dimensional electron gas in a strong magnetic field.
The propagation of a surface acoustic wave (SAW) on GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures is studied in the case where the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) is subject to a high magnetic field and a smooth random potential with correlation length Λ and amplitude ∆. The electron wave functions are described in a quasiclassical picture using results of percolation theory for two-dimensional systems. We ...
